Job Description

The Territory Manager (1) will be responsible for driving on-ground sales of an African steel conglomerate’s steel products through strong engagement with traders, contractors and distributors. This involves converting customer enquiries into confirmed orders, ensuring timely collections and maintaining comprehensive coverage across the assigned territory. The Territory Manager will report to the Regional Manager of the African steel conglomerate and will hold full accountability for sales performance across designated customer accounts.

Key responsibilities
•Carry out daily field sales activities including prospecting, customer visits, product demonstrations and order capture.
•Manage existing accounts comprising traders, retailers and contractors, while developing new accounts to support market share growth.
•Achieve monthly sales targets in both tonnage and revenue as assigned and agreed.
•Prepare proforma and final invoices, coordinate dispatch activities with the logistics team and confirm delivery completion.
•Support collections by following up on pending payments and escalating overdue invoices as required.
•Maintain accurate records of customer communication, visit reports and order status updates.
•Communicate product information, price changes and promotional schemes to customers.
•Gather market intelligence by tracking competitor prices, customer preferences and demand patterns, and highlight regions with high demand but low sales.
•Participate in regular sales meetings and submit all required reports and analysis in a timely manner.
•Ensure compliance with company policies, quality standards and doentation processes for both export and local deliveries.

Skills & competencies
•Strong knowledge of steel products such as rebar, tubes and wire rods, including common applications and technical specifications.
•Proficiency in preparing quotations, responding to RFQs and raising sales orders.
•Ability to use Order Management Tools and smartphone applications for daily reporting and follow-ups.
•Strong customer-facing communication skills, with fluency in French and Wolof; proficiency in English is an advantage.
•High initiative, resilience and persistence, supported by a strong work ethic suited to field-based sales.
•Effective negotiation and objection-handling capabilities with the ability to close sales independently.
•Collaborative mindset with the ability to coordinate effectively with logistics, production and finance teams.

Required experience & qualifications
•Minimum of 3 to 5 years of field sales experience; experience in steel, construction materials, hardware or distributor-driven businesses is preferred.
•Demonstrated ability to meet sales targets in a field environment.
•Valid local driving licence or access to reliable personal transport, such as a motorbike or car, is preferred.
•Prior experience working in the West Africa region is an advantage.
•Minimum qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business, Marketing or an equivalent discipline.

Language & regional requirements
•French: strong spoken and written proficiency, essential for operations in Senegal and Francophone West Africa.
•English: business-level proficiency required for contracts, supplier interaction and corporate reporting.
•Wolof: mandatory requirement, with candidates expected to demonstrate functional working proficiency.
•The role is full-time and field-based. Candidates must be willing to travel regularly across Senegal. Flexibility in working hours is expected, including early starts and occasional weekend or client engagements. The position requires the ability to work effectively in outdoor conditions.
